What
once began as a side project to his main gig with the Charlatans,
Dan Hicks formed DAN HICKS and the HOT
LICKS, which soon overshadowed the Charlatans and went on
to release four albums. Their tight, swinging acoustic
string virtuosity and the hot three part harmonies that characterize
their style, eventually gained enough popularity
to propel them to tour internationally. They also garnered
spots on some of the most watched shows on TV
including Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett & Flip Wilson, leading
him to land on the cover of Rolling Stone twice.
Hicks
sings about ironic romances, barflies, innocent freedoms and
flying saucer pilots in a refreshingly alternative tempo
with charm, humor and warmth.
His
newest release "Beatin the Heat," his first in nearly
twenty-five years, has guest appearances from Brian Setzer
on
guitar, Elvis Costello on vocals, Tom Waits, Rickie Lee Jones
as well as the Divine Bette Midler, in which they ALL
help him to continue his musical journey. Hicks delightfully
off center point of view with his quirky and playful
melodies, perfectly compliment his trademark lyrics: a medley
comprised of complex rhymes and jive vocabulary.
IMACs personal fave of Dan Hicks lyrics asks, "How can
I miss you if you wont go away?" This
concert,
as part of the tour promoting this new album, promises to
be one to remember.
